Elite Ate: Columbus foodie launches March Madness-style bracket to find out the best bakery and sweets in the city

If baskets of bread are more up your alley than basketballs, one Columbus foodie has just the thing for you.

Jessica Caton Diefenbach, who operates the Instagram account Munchybeak–which is dedicated to the Columbus food scene–has created her popular Munchybeak Madness contest for the second year in a row.

Riffing off March Madness, the contest began with 32 Columbus eateries (focused on baking and sweets) and matched them up against each other, with each round being deiced by a public, 24-hour vote.

According to Diefenbach, one of her biggest challenges isn’t finding enough Columbus eateries that fit the bill, it’s the fact that there are too many deserving ones to choose from.

“Columbus has such a diverse set of bakeries, so the hardest part is deciding which 32 businesses to feature each year,” she said.

We’ve currently arrived at this year’s Final Four, which includes the following showdowns: Three Bites Bakery vs. Dan the Baker, and Bite This by Annie vs. Pechka Bakery.

Voting for the Final Four will begin at 4 p.m. on March 24. A poll in Munchybeak’s Instagram stories will be created, which will remain open for 24 hours. The voting for this year’s winner will take place on April 1, with the winner set to be revealed on April 2.

Even though any Columbus foodies find themselves invested in Munchybeak Madness and pushing hard for their favorite spots to win, according to Diefenbach, the contest is all in good fun.

“It is a fun and friendly competition between the businesses and their supporters that can boost their exposure. They really want to see each other succeed in and out of the competition,” she said.

And speaking of voting on Columbus restaurants, you can still participate in this year’s ColumBEST awards here.
