Meet the new craft brewery concept taking over the home of Sideswipe Brewing

Jack McLaughlin

While Columbus is losing one craft brewery, it’s gaining another.

Last month, Sideswipe Brewing announced that it will close at the end of July, noting that a new concept from local homebrewer Jason Wing is slated to take their storefront located at 2419 Scioto Harper Dr.

We didn’t have many details about the new brewery at the time, but now we do. Say hello to Thunderwing Brewing

According to Wing, who noted the name was “a bit of a play” on his last name, said Thuderwing will be dedicated “Quality, Creativity, and Community” as well.

“We want to consistently improve the quality of the beer. We want to never stop offering creative options for customers to try. And get creative with events as well,” Wing said. “With community we want to partner with other organizations and help them drive their passion, their cause, help them take flight and rise up.”

Wing, who has been homebrewing for 10 years and plans to implement many of his own recipes, recalled trips to Clintonville Carryout (now Savor Pint) that ignited his passion for craft beer.

“I was able to walk to Clintonville carry out to pick up random groceries and I noticed they had a really large selection of a bunch of beers I had never heard of. So I wouldjust buy a six-pack at random each time I went in,” he said.

Wing plans to recreate the variety that drew him into craft beer at Thunderwing.

“We are an American Craft brewery and want to produce a wide variety of styles, from lighter easy drinkers to dark stouts and everything in between,” he said. “There will definitely be a few IPAs on tap. And since this will be a fall opening, we are looking forward to a couple amber styles.”

The brewery will offer a rotating slate of food trucks, and customers can also have pizza delivered.

Thunderwing will begin moving into the space on Aug. 1, and Wing said the brewery will likely hold its grand opening sometime this fall.
