The building that once housed Explorer’s Club, and more recently Geordie’s restaurant, is set for a new tenant.

Lupita’s, a new family-owned Mexican eatery, will open soon inside of 1586 S. High St., according to owner Ed Escudero.

He said Lupita’s is aiming for an early August opening, although an exact date has not been announced.

The new Merrion Village restaurant will feature “authentic food, straight from Mexico City,” Escudero said. The menu will be varied, with offerings like Elote (street food-style grilled corn covered in savory sauces and cheese), a cream-based pasta with poblano peppers, authentic sangria and more.

Lupita’s replaces the English pub concept Geordie’s Restaurant at the corner of South High Street and East Morrill Avenue. Geordie’s shuttered in the spring of 2020, shortly after the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in Columbus. The building was also formerly home to the popular restaurant Explorer’s Club, which closed in 2015 and later opened a food truck.
