New restaurant inspired by ‘iconic’ Charleston, South Carolina eatery planned for Downtown Columbus

The Columbus Downtown Commission approved plans earlier this week for a restaurant which will be located at 6 W. Gay St., on the corner of Gay Street and High Street. While the name of the eatery wasn’t revealed, it’s likely the new spot will serve as a serious catch for Downtown Columbus’ food scene.

The eatery, which was approved on Monday, is inspired by an “iconic restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina” according to the project’s developer, Edwards Cos. The name of the restaurant hasn’t been revealed, as a contract for the branding rights of the space is still being determined.

Many have speculated that the new eatery will be based on the lauded Hank’s Seafood Restaurant in Charleston, but this is currently unclear. The name of the restaurant has been revealed yet, and Hank’s did not responded to a request for comment from 614Now by the time this story was published.

The restaurant, which will be located at the same intersection that’s currently home to Janet Echelman’s suspended art installation titled “Current,” will take up nearly 6,000 total square feet. Plans for the new space will see the addition of wood, tile and new signage to update the eatery’s facade, in addition an outdoor patio space.

It’s unclear when the new restaurant plans to open.
