Wendy’s is testing new AI technology for drive-thru orders at a sole Columbus location

In addition to the meteoric rise of ChatGPT, one local Wendy’s will be setting artificial intelligence and Dave’s Doubles on a fascinating collision course.

According to a press release, one Columbus-area Wendy’s will begin testing an AI-powered system for drive-thru offerings using Google software that is specialized to understand the variety of ways customers order off the menu.

According to the press release, the pilot system, which will be called Wendy’s FreshAi, will carry out conversations with customers, can understand made-to-order requests, and will be able to answer questions that are frequently asked.

“For example, because customers can fully customize their orders and food is prepared when ordered at Wendy’s, this presents billions of possible order combinations available on the Wendy’s menu, leaving room for miscommunication or incorrect orders,” the press release reads. “Google Cloud’s generative AI capabilities can now bring a new automated ordering experience to the drive-thru that is intended to enhance the experience that customers, employees and franchisees expect from Wendy’s.”

Wendy’s will begin testing the technology in June, although the specific Columbus restaurant it will be located at was not announced.
