‘Yeasty Boys,’ a New York inspired bakery & sandwich shop, now open

Sav McKee

When Sam Mullen moved from NY to Marysville, OH, he was surprised to find that there seemed to be nothing but unhealthy options for lunch. He wanted to change that.

He created his newest pastry, soup, salad, and sandwich concept, Yeasty Boys Bakery & Delicatessen, which opened last Friday, July 28th, in hopes to offer a lighter, healthier option for lunch. “Around here and other small towns, there’s really nothing but fast food. I wanted to set a trend for healthier eating,” said Sam.

Now, he’s not claiming that a pastrami sandwich is necessarily “healthy,” but all of their bread (besides the locally sourced vegan option) is made in-house from scratch. Their grocery shopping is done locally by Sam, too. Their pastrami is smoked locally and offsite as well, and then brined in-house – it’s “slow food,” not fast food.

Apparently, Marysville appreciates the change in scenery, because Yeasty Boys completely sold out of their pastrami sandwiches yesterday during Monday’s lunch rush.

Along with sandwiches, they offer matzah ball soups and salads, along with vegan chili and vegan meatball subs. Sam said “The Regular” sandwich is the most popular – turkey, ham, salami, mustard, mayo, house seasoning, oil and vinegar, all piled in between a hand-made, Japanese Milk Bread hoagie roll.

Yeasty Boys also makes croissants, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, and a variety of daily specials, like homemade poptarts and banana pudding. “We have the best cinnamon roll in Ohio,” said Sam. He started making his breads and treats and selling them at local farmers markets and always considered opening a bakery. He decided to add on his baked goods as an addition to their lunch options.

“Business has been booming since we’ve opened. We’ve been a big hit here,” Sam happily remarked.

Sam credits his success to living in NY and exploring their deli options, along with having an ambitious sous chef, Taylor Tanner, who he says is “coming up with great things.”

And speaking of great things, Sam and Taylor plan to hopefully start offering more savory breakfast options, but not until their bagel recipe is perfected.

You can stop by for a Yeasty Boys sandwich at 100 N. Main St., Marysville, OH. Check out their Facebook for hours and daily specials.
