Alligators spotted in northwestern Ohio river; One still on the loose

Similar to the time an alligator dubbed “Chance the Snapper” found a home in Chicago’s Grant Park, a pair of alligators were recently observed in northwest Ohio.

According to Meghan Harshbarger, Chief of Communications for the the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), the Department was notified of two alligators in or around the St. Marys River on May 7. The St. Marys River is a tributary of the Maumee River that runs through northwest Ohio.

“ODA attempted to capture two alligators several times without success. One of the alligators was shot and killed by an Ohio Division of Wildlife officer. One remaining alligator, approximately two feet in length, has not been seen since the initial incident,” the Department said in a statement.

It’s currently unclear where the alligators came from. In the state of Ohio, it’s legal to own alligators with a valid Wildlife Shelter Permit.
