Iconic Clintonville business founder has died, but her nearly 45 year-old concept lives on

While Mary Leavitt, known to many as “The Flag Lady” of Clintonville has passed away, her long-standing business will endure.

According to a statement posted to the Facebook page of The Flag Lady, Leavitt’s Clintonville business, Leavitt died earlier this week. She was 87.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news that our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Mary Leavitt (The Flag Lady) passed away today with her family by her side,” the statement reads.

The Flag Lady, which is located at 4567 N. High St. in Clintonville, sold flags, banners and signs for a wide variety of purposes. Leavitt first opened the business in 1980, she started the company going go door-to-door selling flags from the trunk of her car.

And while Leavitt, the business’ founder and namesake, has passed away, According to the concept’s operations manager Dakota Merz, The Flag Lady was sold to Lori Leavitt Watson, Mary’s daughter, in 2017. The Clintonville space will remain open with operating it.
