Columbus has some of the worst drivers in the country, new data survey says; Find out where we rank

A survey of driver data between ranks Columbus has some of the country’s worst drivers.

According to a recent story published by Clever Move, Ohio’s capital city didn’t quite land among the country’s 10-worst driving cities (out of a total pool of 50 cities) but it was close. The list said Columbus has the 12th worst drivers in America.

While that may feel like a subjective claim, Clever Move considered a considerable amount of data between 2014-2020 in the following categories:

  • Average annual traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents from 2014-2020 (weighted 3x)
  • Average annual alcohol-related traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents from 2014-2020 (weighted 3x)
  • Days of precipitation per year (weight 2x)
  • Average annual vehicle insurance premiums in the state
  • Percentage of uninsured drivers in the state
  • Allstate’s best drivers rank
  • Google Trends for “DUI”
  • Auto repair shops per 100,000 residents

The list cited the Arch City’s 171 annual days of precipitation as a factor to this, which was good for 7th-highest among the 50 total cities Clever Move considered.

Additionally, it mentions that Columbus has a higher rate of alcohol-related fatalities when compared to other cities. Columbus has 2.1 alcohol-related driving deaths each year per 100,000 residents, which is more than 20 percent greater than the average.
