Central Ohio eatery making pizza with starter dough that originated 165 years ago
Typically, if something is 165 years old, it’s not a great idea to eat it. But like almost everything in life, there are exceptions to this rule.
According to owner Jason Rosebrough, Mugshots Bar and Grill, the new mafia-themed eatery that’s located at 111 Main St. in Pleasantville, has acquired a special base ingredient to use in its pizzas: A pizza dough starter that was originally created in 1858.
“Huge news at Mugshots Bar & Grill! Chef was able to score us a dough starter that originated in 1858 at one of the very first pizza locations on the West Coast,” a statement from the eatery’s Facebook page reads. “That’s right, Mugshots is now serving 165 year old pizza dough. Like wine, it gets better with age. I cannot wait for you guys to try the all new pizza.”

According to Rosebrough, the family of a friend of a Mugshot’s chef helped them acquired sourdough starter that was once used in a California-based pizzeria that used it nearly 100 years ago.
He said the starter, before being acquired by the pizzeria, was created in a West Coast bakery in 1858.
According to Mugshot’s menu–which features a variety of specialty pies and custom options–the eatery uses a 75 year-old oven as well, so it isn’t just the dough that’s making a unique mark on their pizza.
