Columbus’ first ‘rage room’ opening soon, inviting guests to break and smash objects

Sav McKee

Sometimes, grabbing a beer after work to decompress and commiserate with your coworkers just isn’t enough – you need to smash something.

This fall, there will be a designated space where you can do exactly just that – safely, and most importantly, legally.

Welcome to The Wrecking Company, Columbus’ first “rage room” experience, founded by Kate Zenger, who’s on a mission to destigmatize the need to blow off some steam. “The world is full of pressure and stress and insanity, and I’m excited to offer Columbus a place to let loose and release endorphins,” Zenger emphasized.

Zenger said she initially thought of the concept years ago after realizing that rage rooms were, well, all the rage throughout other cities. Realizing Columbus had nothing like it, she decided to open her own in the historic space located at 234 S. 4th St., on the same block as Dirty Franks, El Camino Inn, and 16-Bit Bar + Arcade.

The Wrecking Company features three separate rage rooms, each sized to your group (between 4-6 people), plus a solo room in case you really just need to be alone. Guests are invited to make their own “rage playlist” and hook it up to the bluetooth speakers in each room, or there will be backup music selected by The Wrecking Company team, too.

First and foremost, safety gear is absolutely essential and provided on site. Guests must sign a safety waiver, and then safety coveralls, gloves, helmets, goggles are all provided. From there, you get to choose your weapon of choice from their “Wall of Weapons,” and a crate of breakables will then be waiting on you in your rage room.

Want to “healthily” get over that breakup? Feel free to write your ex’s name on a stack of plates and smash them up. Didn’t get that promotion your boss promised? Draw their face on a piece of glass and feel free to bang it with a hammer.

Zenger explained that this is a great alternative to going out and drinking (although if you need a drink after, stop by the neighboring bars!). “It’s such a fun group activity, an amazing date night spot, perfect for divorce parties or even bachelor parties. It’s a place to bitch about your boss with your coworkers, too,” laughed Zenger.

If you’re wondering about all the waste that would surely be produced from people smashing glass and electronics to pieces all day, Zenger has a plan for that. The Wrecking Company will take donations all year long from people who have broken plates or electronics they don’t know what to do with, and they’re even partnering with the local bars next door to snag their empty bottles! After guests have purposefully ruined each piece, that broken glass and those electronics will then be responsibly recycled through the proper channels by The Wrecking Company.

The Wrecking Company will hopefully be open sometime in October. The cost is $35 per person for a crate of breakables and plates, or $20 for a solo session. Guests must be 18 or older, or 15+ as long as they’re supervised by a guardian and a guardian signs a waiver for them.

We can soon all slam a laptop shut so hard it breaks without feeling guilty about it! Not speaking from personal experience or anything…
