Columbus City Attorney’s office says local sports bar must shut down by end of year

A local bar that’s been the scene of multiple violent crimes will close by the end of the year, following pressure from Columbus City Attorney’s office.

Cain’s Sports Bar, located at 3475 in the Hilltop, agreed with the city to close after multiple shootings and a double homicide took place there. Previously, City Attorney Zach Klein required the bar to improve safety and security measures, but court documents show that the bar still failed to hire licensed security personnel. Also, nine violent crimes have taken place at Cain’s.

“We want businesses to succeed, but this bar has proven time and again to be a nuisance to the Sullivant Avenue corridor. Owners have been unable to meet court-ordered safety and security improvements, so I applaud the Property Action Team’s work to get this bar shut down so that we can better protect public safety on the westside,” said Klein.

On July 16, 2022, a fight outside the bar resulted in the death of 30-year-old Denver Spencer and 39-year-old Daylan Hawkins after shots were fired, with two more people injured. In March of last year, three people were injured during a shooting outside of the bar, too.

From now until they close at the end of the year, Cain’s has agreed to have the last call at 12:30 a.m., and they must close at 1 a.m. Properly licensed security will also be on site until everyone has left the parking lot. The owners of Cain’s have also agreed to meet with the City of Columbus and Columbus police to discuss any further concerns.
