Columbus’ first beer vending machine lands at local craft brewery

We’ve seen charcuterie vending machines, cake vending machines and even pizza vending machines in Columbus.

So how about one for beer?

Land-Grant Brewing Co. has partnered with local startup VenGuard to bring the first beer vending machine to Columbus.

After a trial run last weekend, the machine is now open to the public at the brewery’s Franklinton taproom, which is located at 424 W. Town St.

Patrons can select between nine different Land-Grant beers, including options like Lemon Glow, Oh, Sure, House Beer and rotating seasonal releases.

The new beer vending machine utilizes “advanced identification technology” to confirm each customer’s age. After inserting their IDs, a camera built into the vending machine scans the customer’s face. Facial recognition software is used to confirm each person’s identity. The machine’s system is also trained using a database of fake IDs taken from campus-area bars.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve our customer experience,” said Adam Benner, Co-Founder of Land-Grant Brewing Co. in a press release. “Partnering with VendGuard allows us to serve our customers faster without compromising on safety.”
