Daniel Vaughn, a Texas BBQ critic and BBQ editor at the Texas-based magazine, Texas Monthly, recently frequented almost 150 BBQ spots around the country rate the best Texas-style barbecue joints that aren’t in Texas.

Turns out, there’s one over 1,200 miles away, right here in Columbus, Ohio, and two others in other Ohio cities. Vaughn classified Hoggy’s BBQ as having some of the best Texas-style BBQ, and suggested ordering the smoked and fried wings with Jamaican Me Crazy Sauce.

Hoggy’s is located at 830 Bethel Rd., specializing in made-from-scratch “authentic Southern BBQ.” They first opened in Linworth back in 1991, and since then, their hand-rubbed, hand-seasoned, and smoked meats have become an institution here in central Ohio.

Two other spots made it on Vaughn’s exclusive list: Just Q’In BBQ in Cincinnati, where he says you should order the Pastrami Sandwich, and Joe’s Barbecue in Kent, where he suggests the smoked brisket.
