New ‘Chicago street food’ concept holds grand opening

Jack McLaughlin

As a Chicago transplant myself, I can tell you there are plenty of days I’m craving food from the Windy City, like an Italian beef sandwich or Chicago dog, and now a new concept is offering exactly that.

Shakedown Street Food, a new “Chicago style street food” restaurant from Newark’s Square Roots Restaurant Group (which is also responsible for 1922 on the Square), has opened its doors to the public.

The eatery is located at DankHouse Brewing Co., which is located at 161 Forry St. in Newark. Shakedown operates out of a repurposed shipping container decorated with brightly-colored graffiti on the DankHouse property.

You can see a full menu here, but the eatery offers everything from Chicago dogs and Italian beef sandwiches to pierogis, pizza puffs, smash burgers and more. Shakedown offers sides like waffle fries, Vitner’s chips and Nuts on Clark (both Chicago brands) and more.
