After lawsuit, months of anticipation, Cedar Point opened world’s tallest and fastest coaster – then had to close it again

Following an accident that led to a lawsuit, and later the closure of the original Top Thrill Dragster, Cedar Point officially opened its bigger, faster brother: Top Thrill 2.

The roller coaster officially opened on May 4, but on May 12, Cedar Point released a statement that said the roller coaster was now closed, yet again. “Top Thrill 2 is currently experiencing an extended closure as Zamperla (the ride’s manufacturer) completes a mechanical modification to the ride’s vehicles,” said the statement.

The statement continued, “Once the modification is complete, Zamperla, the Cedar Point maintenance & operations teams and our third-party ride inspection partner will conduct a thorough review before approving both the modificiation and the reopening of the ride.”

Billed as “the world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch strata coaster,” Top Thrill 2 features two “sky-dominating towers,” it reaches heights of 420 feet tall, and speeds of 120 mph. Top Thrill 2 was preceded by Top Thrill Dragster, a coaster in the same style that was once deemed the world’s largest and tallest. Top Thrill Dragster lasted 10 seasons, before it was closed in 2022. The year before, a woman was injured after a piece of the ride fell and struck a park visitor. Her family later sued Cedar Point. The lawsuit was settled, and terms were not disclosed.

Right now, Cedar Point cannot confirm a reopening date. “We know our guests are excited to experience this incredible roller coaster, and we share your disappointment that we not able to operate it this weekend. We will do everything possible to reopen Top Thrill 2 as soon as we are confident we can deliver the ride experience that our guests deserve,” said Cedar Point’s statement.
