New ‘Superman’ movie filmed in two different Ohio locations

An Ohio city’s downtown area has completely transformed to become the DC city “Metropolis,” and another city’s state beach is now a replica of a military base.

Filming for the new DC Superman movie, called Genesis, has officially commenced, and none other than Downtown Cleveland’s Public Square and Superior Avenue were chosen to be the set of Superman’s hometown of Metropolis! The new set includes Superman and Lois Lane’s workplace, The Daily Planet, plus a bookstore, pizza shop, bakery, deli, and much more!

Bystanders in Cleveland have been able to watch Superman in action, although Public Square and the surrounding streets are shut down for several days. Of course, this could be seen as a nuisance, having to reroute your daily commute and all, but production crews bring millions of dollars, and thousands of jobs, to cities they film in. The Greater Cleveland Film Commission states on their website that since 2009, the increase in media sector activity here in Ohio has resulted in $1.38 billion in economic impact to Ohio, and the creation of over 7,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

But it’s not just Cleveland that’s getting all the love! Bystanders at Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor, OH also witnessed a closed-off beach area for filming. Pictures show what looks like a desert military base for the film.
