Car crashes into south side restaurant; Owner reacts

Buckeye Hibachi, a dining spot in southeast Columbus, became the latest victim to a troubling trend of car crashes impacting local businesses. Last Friday afternoon around 4:45 p.m., the restaurant faced an unexpected disruption when a car collided through its facade, causing significant damage.

Surveillance footage captures the dramatic moment when a silver Toyota Highlander rammed into Buckeye Hibachi, narrowly missing two patrons at the counter. Inside, the scene was chaotic, with shattered glass, overturned tables, and broken chairs.

Vence Sumampouw, the owner and cook at Buckeye Hibachi, was inside during the crash. Reflecting on the ordeal, he recalled, “I couldn’t believe what was happening. It was a surreal moment.” He immediately checked on everyone’s safety, grateful that no customers were in harm’s way.

Sumampouw’s wife and the restaurant’s manager, Tini Fnu, shared her relief. “It’s truly a blessing that no one was seriously injured,” she expressed. However, they acknowledged the challenges ahead. “Losing business even temporarily is tough, especially for our dedicated staff,” Fnu added.

This incident highlights a troubling trend of vehicle-related accidents involving Columbus businesses.

Despite the setback, Buckeye Hibachi is committed to reopening and serving its loyal patrons. “The support from the community has really helped us get through this,” Sumampouw shared with 614Now.
