Gunman near Ohio State’s campus dead after five hour police standoff

A a five-hour, barricaded standoff on August 11 resulted in the death of a gunman hiding near Ohio State’s South campus.

Around 8 a.m., Columbus police responded to calls of a potential burglary in the University District on Worthington Street, with reports that a man was firing a gun in an apartment.

Police identified 21-year-old Asante Miller as the gunman, who eventually fled the scene once officers arrived. When officers located Miller, police reports say that he refused to discharge his firearm. Miller then fled again, hiding and barricading himself in a residence off of West 8th Avenue.

Police and SWAT teams reportedly surrounded the home for hours. Miller was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m. The investigation is ongoing, and it’s currently unclear exactly how Miller died.
