OSU golfer only amateur to advance to Masters finals; paired with Tiger Woods
An Ohio State golfer was not only the lone amateur to make the cut at the Master’s, he was also paired with Tiger Woods for the tournament’s weekend play.
On Friday at Augusta National Golf Course, 22 year-old OSU graduate student Neal Shipley was tied for 30th place, making the cut for Saturday and Sunday play at the 88th iteration of the Masters. The top 60 players qualified for the Masters’ weekend session.
Through the first two days of the tournament, Shipley had a better score than large names like Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson.

Shipley is a Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania native and graduate of Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, and is a graduate student on the Buckeyes golf team. While his high school friend, Carter Pitcairn, served as his caddie, his partner over the weekend had a bit of a higher profile. He was paired with Tiger Woods.
Shipley finished tied for 53rd place with a 12-over 300, a score that bested even Woods’ effort throughout the week.
