Decades-old University District restaurant announces closure

Japanese Oriental Restaurant opened its doors in the North Campus area nearly two decades ago, but by the end of this year, they’re likely calling it quits for good.

The building, located at 2283 N. High St., has served as a pan-asian eatery for OSU students before the spot’s current owners, Chung Aun and family, took over as well. A statement posted to the restaurant’s social media accounts noted it has been in service for over 40 years.

“We’ve got some sad news to share to everyone. We are sad to say that we will be closing this High street location. We don’t have the exact date yet, but we will most likely be closed by the end of the year,” the statement reads. “There’s been a lot of back and forth with the property managers for months, but it seems like this building will be transitioned to more apartments/“common area” after 40+ years in business.”

The restaurant did not respond to a request for additional comments.

The eatery, which offers sushi in addition to menu items hailing from a variety of other Asian cuisines, temporarily closed in 2017 due to construction on High Street. It later reopened at the end of 2018.
