Beloved Columbus-area diner, breakfast spot closes permanently

Gena’s Restaurant served the Westerville community its variety of unpretentious diner fare for decades, but now the local favorite hole-in-the-wall breakfast has officially called its quits.

According to a sign posted to Gena’s front door, the eatery closed for good on March 1.

“We would like to thank everyone for their many years of support, we could not have done it without you. Many of you have become like family to us,” the sign reads. “But after the struggles over the past two years and a lot of soul searching, we have decided to not renew the lease.”

Gena’s was located at 5947 Sunbury in Westerville.

The family-owned diner continued to offer dine-in service through a majority of the pandemic, using plastic partitions between tables.

While the Westerville restaurant offered a lunch menu as well, it was known primarily as a breakfast spot, and for good reason. Besides favorites like the eggs Benedict and Egglette Sandwich, Gena’s offered what it dubbed “The best American pecan roll.”

Gena’s also launched a popular pancake challenge in 2006. that many participated in.
