This Ohio destination ‘Looks Straight out of Europe’ according to Good Housekeeping Magazine

Maybe that European summer vacation didn’t go as planned this year. No worries – apparently, there’s a spot right outside of Columbus that’s reminiscent of Scotland.

Good Housekeeping compiled a list of 35 cities that “Look Straight out of Europe,” and Hocking Hills, Ohio, ranked #29. They said, “Hocking Hills State Park is like Scotland’s famous landscape, complete with its lush greenery and waterfalls as far as the eye can see. It’s a beautiful spot to visit for a hiking adventure.”

This all makes sense, historically speaking – Hocking Hills is considered part of The Appalachian, and according to scientists, the Appalachian Mountains and the Scottish Highlands are the exact same mountain range, once connected as the Central Pangean Mountains.

In the 18th century, Scotch-Irish immigrants found their home in Appalachia, mainly because it reminded them so much of the greenery and mountain air they found in their home countries.

If you’re really wanting to lean into the Scottish vibe without leaving Ohio, there’s a Scottish resort in Hocking Hills called Glenlaurel, which is “America’s only luxurious Scottish Country Estate and Inn,” according to their website. These upscale, furnished cabins feature “charming rooms, an attentive staff, and world-class cuisine.” And, of course, bagpipe music.
