This notoriously scary spot is ‘The Creepiest Place to Visit in Ohio’ according to ‘Thrillest’
“This massive stone castle is basically Hell disguised as Hogwarts,” said Thrillest, one of the top publications for all things food, travel, & culture.
In a recently published article, “The Creepiest Place to Visit in Every State,” Thrillest dubs Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio as the ultimate spooky destination.
“The majestically spired campus housed over 200,000 inmates during its history from 1896-1990. A tour through here on a normal day is grim, but during scare season, it transforms into the biggest prison-based haunted attraction in America: Escape From Blood Prison. The cells and hallways are filled with undead inmates and faucets dripping blood, turning the already creepy reformatory into a bona fide nightmare through Halloween, after which it returns to a regular old haunted prison,” remarked Thrillest.

But this Halloween destination is terrifying all year long. It’s been featured on The Travel Channel for its haunted history and eerie encounters. “The ghosts of these violent and maltreated men are not easily silenced. Visitors and tour guides have been pushed and punched by unseen forces. As with other haunted locations, many claim to feel an inexplicable chill while on prison grounds. Additionally, witnesses have heard cell doors slam and seen dark apparitions. Even the road leading to the Ohio State Reformatory seems haunted. Local legend suggests it is the ghost of Phoebe Wise, a notorious Mansfield hermit and eccentric,” said The Travel Channel.
Personally, this information is enough for me to stay away from this reformatory forever. But if you’re looking for a true ghost encounter, you can book a tour here.
