After five years, this Powell restaurant is closing its doors

While Pablo’s Havana Cafe recently expanded into the North Market Bridge Park, the concept’s eatery in Powell is no more.

According to a video posted to Pablo’s Facebook page, the restaurant officially closed its Powell storefront last week.

“It is Thursday night, December 7. It’s the last time the sign will be up, guys. Sorry to tell you that,” owner Pablo Taura said in the video, in which he stands in front of the eatery’s illuminated sign. “It’s not a bad thing, though, we have a wonderful Venezuelan group coming in, and I’m looking forward to you guys coming in and trying it.”

In an interview with 614Now, Taura cited an ankle surgery and managing the concept’s second location at North Market Bridge Park—which remains open— as reasons for the closure.

“For the last year or so, I’ve been going back and forth with ankle rehab. I just haven’t been able to sustain if,” he said. “In the meanwhile I have a place in Dublin.”

Pablo’s Havana Cafe, which was located at 96853 Sawmill Rd., has operated its Powell location since 2018. In addition to the concept’s North Market Bridge Park location, the eatery is also planning a new restaurant inside The Little Grand Market, a food hall set to open in Grandview later this year.

While the eatery’s Powell location has shuttered, Taura said local fans of the concept will likely still have a chance to patronize the eatery, as the restaurant is planning to bring its food truck The Daily Growler regularly.
