Taco pop-up that continuously sells out acquires food truck; opening location next month
Last year, a new weekly pop-up started making waves throughout the city, allowing people to get a taste of authentic fare you’d only find in Mexico City. After selling out at almost every pop-up, Casa Karmelitas decided to make things a little more permanent – they’re opening a food truck.
Starting on March 9, you’ll be able to grab Casa Karmelitas’ iconic home-made tacos, pozole, and street corn, made right in front of the customers, staying true to their Mexican roots. The truck will be parked outside The Lookout Supply Shop, located at 3440 W Broad St., on Thursdays, 3-9pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, 12-6pm. On the other days, they’ll be moving around the city, popping up at breweries and other local spots.
“We’re not creating anything new, but we’re providing a different experience for people here in Columbus,” said Karma Masri, co-owner of Casa Karmelitas.

Karma, originally from Mexico City, grew up savoring street food at every corner. “I’ve been passionate about the restaurant industry ever since,” she said. “My business partner, Angie Martinez, also grew up in Mexico, and most of our food came from the street…the easiest thing for us to eat was street food from vendors. It’s part of my culture.”
Casa Karmelitas offers clean, simple, yet flavorful proteins, made right in front of the customers, then stuffed into home-made, gluten-free corn tortillas, accompanied by refried beans, fresh herbs, and pickled onions on top. They’ll be offering a weekend brunch menu (what better way to cure a hangover than with something spicy?), plus, they’ll offer a plethora of vegan options, such as the potato, poblano, and grilled onion taco. Don’t forget to try the pozole, which is a hearty, broth-based, traditional Mexican soup, and the classic Mexican street-corn, served with traditional Mexican herbs and onions, tossed with mayo, cheese, and chili, all in a cup. Wash it all down with a bottle of Jarritos.
“I’m so excited to be able to fully showcase our potential and not be restricted on items and space,” emphasized Karma. “And we’re working on creating an awesome outdoor space for the summer [at Lookout Supply]!”
