From carnivals to free kayaking and a food truck fest, this weekend is packed with Scioto Mile-area events

Summer on the Scioto Mile is in full swing and although the views on the riverfront are an attraction within themselves, this weekend will offer two days of family – fun and entertainment – all free of charge.

Kicking off the weekend is Midway on the Mile, a carnival – style event along the Rich Street Bridge. Featuring a roller–rink, trackless train and obstacle course, the festivities aim to bring together the surrounding Columbus community with activities for all ages.

The inaugural event will be held July 12 and 13, 2–7 p.m., and will reoccur with new activities and entertainment Aug 10 and 11.

Free kayaking will also be available on the river July 13, 1–5 p.m. Launching from beneath the Main Street Bridge, the experience is free for all ages and experience levels. Kayaking is first come, first serve and will be organized with a wristband system.

Although high demand is expected and limited spots are present, a second free kayak day will be held Aug 10 under the same guidelines. Life vests and guidance from volunteers will also be provided.

Alongside the events, the Scioto Mile Fountain also puts on free water and light shows every Friday and Saturday evening until August 31st and is open to the public daily from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

The Columbus Food Truck Festival will also be held across the river, on the Scioto Peninsula, and although purchase is required for the featured food trucks, vendors and artisans, the event is open to the public with free admission July 12 and 13.
