Two Columbus neighborhoods hit by mass string of car break-ins this week
It may be Friday the 13th today, but for dozens of Columbus car owners, they’ve been experiencing bad luck all week.
On September 7, about a dozen cars were broken into at the Italian Village complexes, Lusso Apartments and Station 324, with people reporting theft of items inside of the cars, plus costly damage to their vehicles.
Then, on September 12, more than a dozen more cars were reportedly damaged and broken into in Harrison West, starting right before 3:00 a.m. One caller reported three people running around the area at the time of the break-ins, all wearing hooded clothing. The incident occurred at 891 Ingleside Ave., at River House Apartments.

While some reported some change and cash stolen, others reported nothing was taken. It could be possible the people who broke into the cars were looking for something else. An analysis of FBI data by Everytown shows that gun thefts from cars are exponentially increasing. In Columbus, multiple guns are continuously stolen from cars parked at movie theaters, airports, and hotels. In 2023, CPD reported that 770 guns were stolen from vehicles, and in the first month of 2024 alone, 69 guns were stolen during car break-ins. No guns have been reported missing from the cars broken into this week.
Police are still investigating the incidents. If you have any information, contact the Columbus Police Department.
