Today Only: CPD Hiring 911 Emergency Call Takers

Today is the last day to apply for to be a 911 Operator & Emergency Call Taker.

According to the Columbus Division of Police’s facebook page, the application process will be open through the rest of the day.

Some of the requirements for the notoriously stressful job are:

Basic Spelling & English Usage;
General knowledge of data entry;
4,000 keystrokes per hour;
Ability to listen and process information while entering information using a keyboard;
Ability to hear, understand and transcribe;
Ability to work under pressure and in a high stress environment;
Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in emergency or crisis situations;
Ability to assess and prioritize information quickly;
Ability to operate a computer and utilize related software;
Ability to see, to read and verify the accuracy of information on multiple computer screens;
Ability to Recall information;
Ability to read a map;
Locate principle streets;
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships;
Be composed and communicate effectively with callers who are disoriented, excited, hysterical, angry or otherwise not clear-minded.

Despite the high demands of the position, it is looking to pay between $19.32 – $25.94 an hour. A high school diploma or a GED is required as well.

“You definitely need to be able to remain calm in pressuring situations,” said Tracie Sterner to NBC4i, who works in the call center. “Any kind of call you get in, you could go from having a simple easy call to having a shooting or something like that.”
