Green Lawn Cemetery tours are back

Who doesn’t love a chance to see some of our city’s historic hot spots?

Pre-registration is available now for a walking tour of Green Lawn Cemetery, from 2-4 p.m. July 25 courtesy of Columbus Landmarks. The tour will focus on the origins of the cemetery and the design elements incorporated by Landscape Architect Howard Daniels. Advance registration is required.

Registration is $20 for Columbus Landmarks members and $25 for non-members.

Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Greenlawn Ave., originated after the Green Lawn Cemetery association formed in 1848 to create a space to replace earlier city cemeteries that had become landlocked and nearing capacity, according to greenlawncemetery.org. After a charter was granted in the spring of 1849, a total of 84 acres were acquired for the project from local ranchers.

The design was heavily influenced by the Rural Cemetery Movement, which focused on natural and serene settings for cemeteries. The first burial at the site happened later that summer in 1849 after a cholera outbreak.

Green Lawn Cemetery is now the state’s second largest cemetery with 360 acres and over 154,000 interments. It’s also a registered arboretum.
