Columbus Mayor announces plan to issue executive order requiring indoor masks

On Sept . 8, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther announced his plan to issue a city-wide executive order that will require masks to be worn in all public indoor spaces. The order will apply regardless of vaccination status.

“This is about keeping Columbus safe and open for business by employing a strategy we know can slow the spread of COVID-19,” Ginther said during a press conference.

According to Ginther, the executive order will go into effect Friday, and more details will be released about it in the coming days. He also stated his desire to work with the Columbus City Council to turn the order into a city ordinance. 

“Like I said, Columbus is open for business, our schools are open; our healthcare professionals are at their breaking point, and we need to step up to do more for our neighbors in crisis,” Ginther said.

Following Ginther’s announcement, the cities of Bexley and Whitehall have also issued indoor mask mandates that will also go into effect Friday.
