Better Together: Middle West Spirits and Pecan Penny’s make sweet BBQ together

Barbecue lovers, we see you, and we have some exciting news.

Middle West Spirits is giving BBQ outfit Pecan Penny’s spent bourbon barrel staves, which the 113 E. Main St. eatery will use to smoke pork and brisket.

A stave is the narrow strip of wood that you see on the sides of a barrel, and the use of it here gives the meat a sweeter, caramelized spicy finish.

Middle West Spirits Founder Ryan Lang said he appreciates the collaborative spirit that abounds in the Columbus food and drink community.

“We love partnerships where cocktails made with our spirits are paired with food that includes our whiskey,” he said.

The collaborative menu will be available from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Dec. 12-13.

The “Bourbon Barrel-Smoked Q” meat will be available in sandwiches and platters, as well as by the pound or as a whole pork butt or brisket. The Pecan Penny’s platter includes smoked pork and brisket, Middle West’s Straight Bourbon Sauce, Texas Toast and a choice of side. The special menu will also feature craft cocktails aged in Middle West Spirits Bourbon barrels.

The collaboration is a great opportunity for people to try something special, said Pecan Penny’s General Manager Marritt Vaessin.

“And with the opportunity to grab our cocktails, either socially distanced here or to go, there are plenty of reasons to stop by or call in your order on Dec. 12 and 13.”
