North Market set to kick off Night Market series tonight

Jack McLaughlin

Get ready to experience the historic North Market in a whole new light.

Or, more accurately, in a whole lot less light.

Starting tonight at 6, the 2021 season of Night Market officially begins, which allows patrons to roam the stalls of a temporary outdoor marketplace featuring a slew of local makers, artisans, and growers. Regular North Market vendors will be given the option to participate as well, as the indoor marketplace will remain open until 9 p.m., when the night market shuts down.

“Basically, it’s a way to keep the market open a little later, and it turns into a special, fun, outdoor event,” said Meghan Brouillette, director of communications for the North Market.

The Night Market event—which according to Brouillette pays homage to the traditional night markets of China and southeast Asia that have become increasingly popular in recent years—will provide more than just opportunities for shopping and dining.

The event will also provide fun for the whole family, with games like giant Jenga and cornhole on site, in addition to live music throughout the evening from the Columbus-based cover band Bears on Unicycles.

And what’s a fun after-hours event without the chance to grab a drink or two? Provided by Barrel & Bottle, the eclectic bottle shop located within the North Market, an outdoor bar will give guests the opportunity to purchase libations (via drinks tickets). While the outdoor menu will be limited, guests can also purchase drinks from the Barrel & Bottle location inside North Market, which will boast a full menu.

“We always allow Sip and Stroll during normal market hours, and during Night Market you can walk around with a drink outside as well,” Brouillette said.

Night Market is held between June and October, on the third Friday of each month, meaning there are four other chances you have to stroll the iconic downtown marketplace after dark later this year.

Don’t let the sun set on your chance to go.
