Restaurant and bar inside Bexley supermarket closes

Market District Kitchen & Bar, the restaurant situated on the second floor of Bexley’s Market District Express, a Giant Eagle supermarket located at 2250 E. Main St., has closed. That doesn’t mean the massive grocery store chain is giving up on the space, however.

Giant Eagle plans to repurpose the roughly 4,000 square foot eatery, although no firm decision has been made about what it will become.

According to store manager Shannon Green, the supermarket chain is exploring a wide variety of options for repurposing the restaurant that had served Bexley shoppers since the store opened in 2016, nearly five years ago.

“There have been a lot of things thrown around, but as for specific plans, it’s just too early to tell right now,” she said. “Leasing the space is a possibility. A new concept is also a possibility.”

The restaurant has one final private party on the books for this weekend, after which it will fully close. The kitchen is also no longer open for walk-in diners, meaning the space will remain empty until a decision is made about its future.

Market District Kitchen & Bar featured a straightforward menu of handhelds like burgers, tacos, and grilled cheese; a wide variety of salads; and shareable starters that included a chicken flatbread and braised short ribs. The space also featured a full service bar.

And while Green noted there’s no timeline in place for when a decision will be made about the future of the space, she noted that employees and customers alike are looking forward to what it will eventually hold.

“We’re all really excited to see what’s going to come next,” she said.
