The Weekender: Decadent Cinnamon Rolls
Cinnamon rolls remind me of Christmas morning, and since we are officially in December, I thought it was the perfect time to discuss these indulgent breakfast treats. I do not discriminate when it comes to the ideal icing (cream cheese or buttercream) this breakfast staple is perfect in many forms. I have tried practically every cinnamon roll in Columbus, so you don’t have to.
•Hen Quarter, located in Bridge Park, is the foolproof destination for a southern brunch. I went for the Open-Faced Chicken Biscuit (WOW) and decided to kick off my meal with the Cinnamon Roll appetizer. Our waitress delivered two generous rolls with creamy peaks of cream cheese icing, heavily dusted with powdered sugar. Featuring golden edges with a soft center, I took pleasure in tugging off the defined outer layers and using them to scoop up the abundant amounts of thick icing. Chewy yet fluffy, this cinnamon roll is thoughtfully balanced, not overly sweet, and the perfect start to a weekend brunch.
Pair with – Hen Quarter Bloody Mary- spicy and flashy with a shrimp and bacon garnish
•Fox in the Snow is known for its epic bakery menu. An extensive menu of incredible baked goods makes it hard to single out just one, but Fox’s cinnamon roll is utter perfection. The brioche dough allows for a golden crust and pillowy center. The tender pastry circles layers of cinnamon and sugar and is coated in a hefty amount of cream cheese icing. The brioche dough makes this enormous roll more bread-like and less sweet, and perfectly offsets the sweet cream cheese icing. My favorite part is biting into the heaping amount of icing that has bits of crystalized sugar throughout.
Hidden Gem – Coffee Milkshake. Mic drop.
•Mrs. Goodman’s Baking Co. has the best buttercream icing in Columbus: Yes, I said it. So, if you are looking for a cinnamon roll with buttercream icing, they are a must. If you ask them, the trick is an exorbitant amount of real butter. Goodman’s cinnamon roll is airy with distinct layers separated by a gooey cinnamon, sugar, and butter paste, drizzled in a thin layer of powdered sugar icing, and crowned by firm buttercream. Goodman’s is exceptional at balancing the savory dough, spiced filling and sweet icing. Make sure to buy extras, because after one bite of this delectable pastry, you may find yourself refusing to share.
