Traditional Japanese coffee stand opens in Granville

“Yatai” is a Japanese word that roughly translates to “food stand”. It also represents a type of traditional type of mobile vendor stall that has seen a return to popularity in its native Japan recently.

And now, a Yatai-style coffee vendor is open in the Granville area.

Yatai Coffee, which held its grand opening on Nov. 6, can now be found as a pop-up in the Granville area.

“Because the word ‘Yatai’ in Japanese refers to a mobile food stand, it supported what we were trying to do, simply delivering really good coffee in a really appreciable way,” said owner Coleman Simeral.

To that end, Yatai offers only single-origin coffee–without cream or sugar–and the new vendor even avoids offering espresso beans to keep things as streamlined as possible.

“It’s about that Japanese value of living with simplicity and a direct sense of purpose,” Simeral said.

While Yatai doesn’t have a full schedule for future events just yet, you’ll be able to find them at Seek No Further Cidery on Saturday mornings and Three Tigers Brewing on Sunday mornings. Simeral said more events and collaborations are coming soon as well.
