What’s on our plate

Jack McLaughlin

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot of really great things to eat in Columbus. And since many eateries are rolling out new seasonal menus and items, there’s even more to love. From burgers to pho to dessert-inspired bagels, here’s a list of our favorite new dishes from around the Cbus.

Cleaver, Butcher’s Burger

Luckily for, well, everyone, this highly-popular and meat-focused Grandview eatery recently released a new menu, and there’s a lot of great stuff on it. We’re going with their Butcher’s Burger, which features ground beef from The Butcher & Grocer, thick-cut Cleaver bacon, bacon demi, Snowville white cheddar, roasted red onion, lettuce, house-pickled ohio cucumber, and homemade mayo.

Sweet Carrot, Sesame Ginger Shrimp

Launched during Lent to provide meat-free options to Columbus diners, you’ll want to jump on this seafood dish from Sweet Carrot while you can. The new menu item is seasoned with their signature barbeque rub and then finished in a sesame ginger sauce for an extra burst of flavor. Their shrimp can be added as a protein to any of the restaurant’s corn cakes, salads, mac and cheese dishes, or sandwiches (which has been the most popular thus far).

Fried Chicka Bang/Meatball Mafia, The April O’Neil

The deep-cut 90s references never stop rolling for the exciting new Columbus pop-up, Fried Chicka Bang. As a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan myself, this is my favorite one yet. And did we mention their newest sandwich is also pizza-themed? Done as a collaboration with Meatball Mafia out of Hilliard’s Center Street Market, this one features fried chicken, pizza cheese, meatballs, and fried pepperoni from Ezzo Sausage Co., all topped with red sauce. The eatery plans on releasing regular sandwiches done as collaborations with other Columbus businesses, so keep your eye out for more.

The Guild House/The Joseph, “Do Not Disturb” Menu

This one is more of a specialty food-based event than anything else, but it comes with an exciting new menu, so it’s worth a taste for fans of high-end Columbus dining. For a limited time, The Guild House is partnering with the boutique Short North hotel The Joseph for what Cameron Mitchell Restaurants refers to as a “unique, luxury experience”. The menu for the event, called “Do Not Disturb”, is a private, six-course meal highlighted by entrees like pan-seared Pacifico sea bass in a citrus brown-butter sauce and juniper-scented bison steaks with shallot soubise and sauce veneur. The menu is offered with a one-night stay at the hotel, and unfortunately isn’t offered at the Guild currently.

Lan Viet, Hanoi-style Steak Pho

While this technically won’t be available until next week, if you’re a fan of pho, you don’t want to miss out on any of Lan Viet’s special offerings. Ever since opening their new North Market Bridge Park location, the northern Vietnamese eatery has churned out a host of new dishes, and this one looks like one of the best yet, featuring pho with tender steak, garlic, and onions all pan-fried in beef fat.

Jeni’s/The Lox Bagel Shop, Brambleberry Crisp bagel

We thought we would end this list with something you can pick up for dessert, and this one looks like a real winner in that department. Because when you combine two of the most beloved eateries in Columbus, it’s not surprising that the result is really, really good. This tag-team effort starts with a bagel from The Lox Bagel Shop and smothers it with vanilla bean cream cheese, brambleberry jam, and toasted oat streusel for a savory and sweet treat you’d be crazy to pass up.
