“Like a volcano had erupted:” Popular butcher shop closed indefinitely following fire; Here’s how you can help
The Hungarian Butcher is one of several Columbus names (alongside The Butcher & Grocer, Macelleria and more) that have pushed craft butcher shops from the fringes into the limelight of the local food scene.
Following a recent fire, however, the Linworth storefront will remain closed for the time being.
According to owner Dan Varga, the fire over Memorial Day weekend, during a seemingly routine evening.

“A little over a week ago, the smokehouse was loaded up with pastrami to smoke overnight like we have done hundreds of times. The next morning, Dan had no idea what he was going to walk into. Upon unlocking the door and stepping in… everything was covered with a layer of soot like a volcano had erupted. “
The Hungarian Butcher created a GoFundMe fundraiser to help Varga with the costs of rebuilding the store. You can donate yourself here. At the time this story was published, $3,700 of the butcher shops’s $25,000 goal had been raised.
According to the GoFundMe page, there isn’t currently a timetable for when Hungarian Butcher plans to reopen.
“As of right now, the remediation company has started their job in the shop. Unfortunately, the soot and smoke damage is quite extensive and will require a thorough clean of everything. Until this is completed and inspected, the shop will remain closed,” the fundraiser reads.
