German Village café quietly closes; popular sandwich & gelato shop taking over space
While a spot for tea and smoothies quietly closed its doors, an authentic Italian gelato and sandwich stop is opening their second location right away in its place.
Ciao Café’s first location in Downtown Delaware has been a tremendous success for the past 7 years, and owners Eva and Tani are excited to bring their second gelato and sandwich concept to German Village, which will be located at 214 Thurman Ave., right next to Fox in the Snow in the building that used to be the home of Cafetique, which recently closed.

Eva and Tani were born in Albania but lived in Italy for 13 years, learning authentic methods of making desserts such as gelato, tiramisù, cannolis, and savory options like paninis and Italian sandwiches. “We came to America with the purpose to open a gelato & coffee shop,” Tani told 614Now.
And they’re living their dream. Ciao Gelato will not only offer all of the aforementioned treats, but also espresso, coffee, and affogato. Tani also said there will be plenty of gluten-free and vegan options!
“We can’t wait to be in German Village,” Tani emphasized. They’re planning to softly open in mid-January, with a grand opening in February.
