Jack McLaughlin

An Ohio resident who served as a national agriculture expert, and an unexpected internet celebrity, has died.

Carroll, Ohio-based farmer Dave Brandt, who became internet-famous after a meme of him alongside the text “It ain’t much / but it’s honest work” gained viral popularity in 2018 has passed away, according to a report from “Progressive Farmer.”

The report says Brandt, a Vietnam veteran who began farming in Ohio in the 1960s, died on May 21 after sustaining injuries in a car crash in Illinois on May 18.

While the meme featuring Brandt offered him a meteoric rise to internet celebrity, he more quietly made a significant national name for himself as an innovative “no-till” farmer throughout a career in agriculture that spanned more than 50 years.

“Brandt will be remembered as a global leader in no-till, cover crops, soil health, nutrient dense crops, and direct marketing. Agriculturalists from around the world visited his Fairfield County farm each year to see his soils first-hand and learn from his many years of experience. He also traveled the world speaking about his farm,” a story from “Ohio Country Journal” about Brandt’s death reads.
