Row of Downtown historic establishments could be saved from proposed demolition

A couple of months ago, plans were submitted to the Columbus Downtown Commission that proposed the demolition of a row of beloved restaurants & establishments to make way for a new 23-story skyscraper called The Estrella.

The Estrella’s mixed-use development would be built on the grounds that currently house Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace, 16-Bit Bar+Arcade, and other establishments on that S. Fourth Street Corridor, which, according to the city, were built between 1900 and 1940.

However, after city commissioners and even the Columbus public expressed their concerns, the developers have since changed their initial proposal, with a new proposal that would save 16-Bit, Dirty Frank’s, and the now-closed Red Velvet Cafe. The new proposal would still consider demolitioning 232 S. 4th St., which currency houses the Psychic Gallery.

The 232 S. 4th St. site is proposed to become a park, restaurant patio, or entry space, depending on who becomes the tenant, according to the new plans.

The new proposal also changed the 23-story skyscraper to 24 stories, including 347 structured parking spaces with apartment units (including penthouses), plus 18,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor.
