Gallicchio’s perfect pies, a monthly review: Brooklyn Pizza
Born and raised in Columbus, Mike Gallicchio is first and foremost an entrepreneur. You might be familiar with some of his work. He’s owner of the Columbus Food Truck Festival, Columbus Wine Festival, and Columbus Fiery Foods Festival, as well as a food truck fabrication company, Titan Trucks. His father (Pops) is the real pizza connoisseur of Columbus—He owned several Domino’s Pizza franchises. Once he was old enough, though, Gallicchio spent many a night makin’ pies and traveling from store to store proofing dough and slapping sauce. While he’s since eked out a living in a different part of Columbus’ cuisine scene, Gallicchio’s love for all things pizza has remained, and searching out perfect pies is something he’s passionate about. Every month, you can count on Gallicchio to share one of his favorite pizza places. Will it be one of your own favorites, or a new place to try?

Pizza for breakfast rating: 5
I made the trek up to Powell last Friday to check out the famed Brooklyn Pizza. I’m saying all the way up because I live in the downtown Columbus area, and for me Powell is a serious hike.
This was my second trip to Brooklyn Pizza and because of its popularity and loyal fanbase, I thought I should add it to my current series on Columbus-area New York style pizzerias.
Brooklyn pizza is located in a strip mall in downtown Powell. If you plan on grabbing a pie from the pizzeria on a Friday or Saturday night be warned, downtown Powell is a busy, bustling place and traffic is heavy, so give yourself plenty of time for the trip.
I understand the popularity of Brooklyn Pizza. The shop is surrounded by an ocean of large, corporate pizza chains (those which shall not be named). Powell does not have a lot of small mom and pop pizza spots, so Brooklyn Pizza stands out like a well in a desert.
Brooklyn Pizza’s fame is also based, and rightfully so, on how good the pizza is: because it’s good; very good. It’s not my favorite New York style pizza joint in Columbus; I like my crust a little thicker and chewier, and I prefer a little bit more cheese on my slices than Brooklyn Pizza provides, but the pizza was tasty, foldable and I highly recommend this place.
The Powell pizzeria sticks to the basics and their menu is small and simple: What they do, they do well. During my visit I did grab a calzone and a Stromboli, and I will tell you the Stromboli was amazing and very cheesy. I may make the trip up there again just for another.
I give Brooklyn Pizza a five on my pizza for breakfast scale. The pie holds up to refrigeration and you can either pop it in the microwave or the toaster oven to reheat.
Brooklyn Pizza states they are Ohio’s only authentic New York style Pizzeria. I’m not sure on the only part, but it is authentic. If you’re looking for a good all-around local pizzeria, check out Brooklyn Pizza, you will not be disappointed.
