From “Grossology” to the science of mac and cheese, check out a few of the most interesting exhibits at COSI’s Big Science Celebration this year

The COSI Science Festival, for the first time in two years, is once again an in-person event. This means that the massive congregation of science and STEM booths held on the final day of the festival—known as the Big Science Celebration–is back as well.

And we want to give you a little sneak peak.

The Big Science Celebration, which features more than 100 different interactive and educational demonstrations lining the riverfront outside of COSI, will be held this year on May 7. And with everything from academic mathematics to mac and cheese featured, there’s truly something for every interest. While it’s not possible to touch on everything, we curated a list of some of our favorites.

Take a look, and get ready for the COSI Science Festival!

Otterbein University: Grossology: The Science of Icky, Sticky, Disgusting Things

While we’re pretty sure Grossology isn’t actually a field of scientific study, we are all for this exhibit. It’s a little hard to say why exactly, but there’s something fundamentally intriguing about the weird and off-limits.

The Ohio State University – Wexner Medical Center: Multiple Exhibits

The Wexner Medical Center is responsible for five different exhibits in this year’s Big Science Celebration. And with everything from a mobile mammogram unit to a giant, inflatable colon (yes, you read that correctly), you won’t want to miss what the Wex is bringing.

Bob Evans Farms: The Science of Mac and Cheese

While we’ll admit we didn’t have Bob Evans pegged as a traditionally scientific institution, that’s the beauty of the Big Science Celebration: Nothing is off limits. And if that means learning the science behind our favorite food, we’re all for it.

Columbus Metropolitan Library: Marshmallow Cannon

I mean, do we really have to say anything else. As long as there’s a marshmallow cannon present, you can count us in.

The Ohio State University – Center for Aviation Studies: Biofilm Slime Lab

You had us at “Slime Lab.” And while we don’t want to harp on the gross side of things too much here, the Big Science Celebration is a time to get out there and experience all of the fascinating, fun and downright unusual things you’ve always wanted to. Sime is definitely up there for us.
