A new, long-distance railroad plan will connect Cbus to NYC, Dallas, and New Orleans
Most of us have heard the news that Columbus, plus other larger cities in Ohio, have been selected for an Amtrak expansion that would connect us to other cities throughout the Midwest, including Detroit and Chicago.
But now, it looks like we might be able to travel a lot further.
The Federal Railroad Administration just introduced a new study that would connect Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati, to New Orleans, New York City, and even Dallas, TX via long-distance passenger rail routes. They announced these plans with the following images:
This new study is of course, very new, and still in the planning phases, but it’s incredibly exciting that Columbus, and other Ohio cities, are being considered as a halfway point between many other larger cities. In order for this to be approved, there needs to be more legislation, and the earliest possible timeline would be 2040.

In case you missed the news last year, Senator Sherrod Brown announced that Ohio was a priority for Amtrak expansion, and here’s the announced corridors that would receive funding if completely approved:
- Cleveland-Columbus-Dayton-Cincinnati (the 3C+D corridor)
- Cleveland-Toledo-Detroit
- Chicago-Fort Wayne-Columbus-Pittsburgh, the Midwest Connect corridor via Lima, Kenton, Marysville, Columbus, Newark, Coshocton, Newcomerstown, Uhrichsville, and Steubenville in Ohio
- Daily Cardinal Service, increasing service frequency from three days per week to daily on Amtrak’s current service to Cincinnati between New York City, Washington, DC and Chicago, IL via the States of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois.
