Beloved local theater to reopen Memorial Day weekend

The Drexel Theatre was closed for over a year, but on May 27, the longtime local space will finally welcome back guests.

According to a release, the theater will operate under a phased reopening plan. Screenings will be limited to four per day, Thursdays through Sunday in only two of three theaters. Seating capacity will be limited to 25%. Masks will also be required.

“It was important to honor the donors, members, and community whose generous support has been critical during these unprecedented times by reopening in a responsible way that best positions the theatre for long-term success,” Drexel Theatre Manager Jeremy Henthorn said in a prepared statement. “Taking the reopening in phases, paying close attention to the timing of film industry releases, and ensuring we are able to offer patrons a safe and welcoming space to return to, all make this the right time to invite everyone back to Columbus’ first home for independent film.”

During opening weekend, the Drexel will show “A Quiet Place Part II,” “Dream Horse,” “Nomadland,” and “Minari”. On June 11, the theater will begin screening “In the Heights”. Tickets for all shows will be limited to 25% capacity and pre-purchasing online is recommended.
