Popular fiction series comes to life as musical at Columbus Children’s Theatre

Jack McLaughlin

Columbus Children’s Theatre (CCT) has brought a popular underdog story to life—with a unique twist.

The first show of CCT’s 2024-2035 season, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical” will be performed at CCT until Aug. 18. It premiered on Aug. 9.

A musical interpretation of Jeff Kinney’s youth fiction series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the production centers around protagonist Greg and his quest to gain some popularity among one of the toughest crowds imaginable: Middle schoolers.

The contents of Greg’s cartoon diary come to life (and to song) on the Columbus Children’s Theatre stage, from hall passes to drama amongst friends, and much, much more.

Directed by Brian Gray, with choreography by A.J. Fischer and musical direction from Patrick Schaefer, the new CCT production is ultimately a story about the nature of friendship.

The Musical is a story about friendship. I really wanted this to be our centerpoint as it is what Greg comes to realize: the importance of friendship, someone to have your back and you to have theirs,” Gray said. “The score is simply amazing and really lends to the story telling.”

The Theatre also leans into a unique casting model—which is unlike many other children’s theaters—that makes the production feel particularly real and approachable.

“We proudly employ an age-appropriate casting model in all of our productions, meaning that adult characters are played by adult professionals, and youth characters are portrayed by talented youth artists from our community,” said CCT executive director Susan Pringle. “This model gives opportunities for artists of all ages in our community to thrive here in Columbus and gives our audiences a theatrical experience that rivals the touring productions from Broadway.”
