An intimate look inside Columbus’ newest rooftop bar
You might hear the words “hotel bar” and be perplexed why your friend asked to meet you there. After all, hotel bars used to get a bad rap – but when you step into The Junto, Franklinton’s newest independent lifestyle hotel, you’ll understand exactly why their rooftop bar, Brass Eye, could be Columbus’ hottest new spot for a night out.
Reaching the rooftop was an experience itself. The attendants told me to take the last elevator to the left and push the button “8R” to get to Brass Eye, but I could barely focus on their directions – I was too busy marveling at the leather and velvet seating in the lobby, the moody lighting, the enormous fireplace, the hundreds of books, and the mixture of textures that transported me to the boutique hotels in Los Angeles. I couldn’t believe that I was in Columbus. I know that I’ll be back for a cappuccino at Maudine’s – and I’ve already picked out the exact spot I’ll have it in – curled up on the plaid couch in the corner, basking in the sunlight with a good book.

My friend and I both opted to sit outside on Brass Eye’s rooftop; the views were worth melting in the 90 degree heat. Although, the indoor lounge was enticing, with plush, 1970’s couches, marble and leather accents, and subdued lighting that allowed the city skyline to shimmer through the windows.
To cool off, we ordered some fresh libations. The Not Yo Pina Colada, crafted with two different rums, Coco Lopez, and pineapple, shaken with ice and served in a charming pineapple glass, and the Happy Camper, consisting of Watershed Four Peel, citrus, vanilla bean, and a frothy farm egg, provided us with a tropical escape. The glasses of ice cold orange wine (the Borgo Savaian Di Bastiani Stefano) made the temperature outside a little more bearable, too (along with the ceiling fans!). We took our drinks and explored the roof together, both noting how cozy and intimate this space feels. The strung lights; the fireplaces; the snug seating; we could have stayed for hours (and, well, we did).
I’m already anticipating my next time here, trying more cocktails and more of the small plates, like the olives and fried asparagus. My friend and I found ourselves eagerly making plans to visit again as soon as possible, already picking out the seats we want during the cooler months, right in front of the rooftop fireplace.
